Is Invisalign suitable for Kids under 14 ?

tumblr_static_10pvl0yrnvuo0444kc44wwssk

Invisalign is a quickly growing alternative to traditional braces. Imagine, if you will, a set of braces that cannot be seen. That is the major selling point of Invisalign. From teens to adults, the craze of a perfect smile without the stigma of being called “metal mouth” is very appealing.

Invisalign costs around the same as a pair of regular braces and allows you to eat a greater variety of foods. They require a few simple cleanings every day, and can be taken out and put back in. And unlike braces, Invisalign require only about 20 hours of use – rather than the 24/7 hours of use with traditional metal braces. Plus, braces can’t be taken out and often cause sores and pain from the various metal parts, much worse than the minimal discomfort of Invisalign aligners. With all of these benefits, many parents wonder if pre-teens Essex and Herts  can get Invisalign!

For adults and teens, Invisalign won’t affect self-esteem by correcting your smile without people even noticing, unlike metal braces which are often associated with being “embarrassing” or “ugly”. Teens and pre-teens greatly benefit from getting Invisalign VS getting braces according toInvisalign Dentist Essex. Self-esteem is critical for developing children, especially teens who are constantly under a variety of educational and social stressors. For adults, the real appeal of Invisalign is the freedom to eat, drink, and avoid being gossip material at the water cooler. It is no wonder, then, that Invisalign is becoming more and more popular, especially at Dr. Bhatt at Invisalign Dentist Essex

But what about children with dental issues before the teenage years? They too are put under educational and social stressors. Which brings us to the question, can pre-teens get Invisalign too? Unfortunately, there is no yes or no answer. Ultimately, it is the answer of the pre-teen’s dentist or Dentist . Invisalign is generally safe for developing pre-teens and the tooth placement lasts a very long time. With a consultation from Dr. Bhatt and the team atInvisalign Dentist Essex, you and your child will be able to determine whether or not Invisalign in Essex  will fill your needs.

What does Invisalign have to say about their product on pre-teens? The website doesn’t mention Invisalign for pre-teens, but after a quick message to Invisalign, they responded that as long as the pre-teen has a fully developed set of teeth, Invisalign can be used. A physical mouth checkup and X-rays fromInvisalign Dentist Essex will give you an answer as to whether or not Invisalign is possible for your pre-teen at this point in time.

The biggest challenge, assuming your pre-teen is qualified for Invisalign, is to make sure they understand and follow through with the Invisalign trays. For some pre-teens, it is easy to follow instructions at home, but in school it is possible your child may forget some of the responsibilities that come with the trays. According to Dr. Bhatt, a common problem with pre-teens is forgetting to take the trays out before eating or not wearing the trays for an appropriate amount of time per day, which can extend and restrict treatment. Make sure your child understands and follows all instructions from your dentist or Dentist .

To summarize, Invisalign works well for adults and teens, but only a professional, such as Dr. Bhatt of Invisalign Dentist Essex , can decide whether or not your pre-teen qualifies for Invisalign treatment. Invisalign can be a huge responsibility, but with proper discipline your pre-teen will have a great set of straight teeth they can treasure forever without the hassle of traditional metal braces. Impressionless Retainers- Invisalign Vivera Retainers from a Digital Scan

viveraretainers-2

We have recently introduced Vivera retainers to our patients.  This takes uncomfortable alginate impressions out of the equation!  We are currently the only office in Oregon producing these from our iTero digital laser scanner.  After laser scanning, the file uploads to Invisalign in about 10mins.  Since this is such a new product from Invisalign, their turn around time is about 3wks.  My guess it that as demand and possibly competition increases, their turn around time will reduce.  Right now, they are the only company able to provide this service- i.e. retainers without the need of an alginate impression !

Invisalign sends you 4 sets of clear retainers from this scan (no option for fewer).    Their price is extremely competitive in that they can produce these 4 sets for the same price that most of us charge for a single set. Our patients are loving this addition to our practice.  So much so that I may have to buy another scanner.  Our current scanner is used for all initial and final records scans as well as now for retainer scans.

The Vivera retainers are made of a material that is quite clear but considerably more durable than that of an Invisalign tray.  Another nice feature about this technology is that even though it is unlikely that someone will quickly go through 4 sets of retainers, Invisalign has their file available for future orders

Get a New Smile Fast with Fastbraces™

orthodonticsHave you found yourself wishing that you could improve your smile? If so, it’s time to consider sseeingInvisalign Dentist Essex . Many people put off orthodontic treatment thinking that they don’t have time to wear braces or potentially feel self-conscious about their appearance. Now, with Fastbraces™ technology, you can get the smile you’ve always wanted in a fraction of the time it would take with traditional braces. Traditional metal braces are usually worn for at least two years to move the teeth into better positions, but with Fastbraces™, that time is cut down to just one year. Triangular brackets are used to exert gentle yet effective forces on the teeth, moving them faster than traditional square brackets. Fastbraces™ may be suitable for teenagers and adults alike, depending on what the orthodontist recommends. This new technology moves the crown and the root of the tooth at the same time without posing a risk to you and your smile. If you’ve been lamenting the appearance of your crooked teeth, it’s time to see what Fastbraces™ can do for you.

3 Tips for Squeaky Clean Invisalign Aligners

Cleaning your Invisalign aligners and Vivera retainers can be tricky business.

f93da333b21266f652e910590c9b6b4a

Let me walk you through the options as I see them, based on my experience cleaning hundreds of them for our patients.

How-to Have Squeaky Clean Invisalign Aligners

The way I see it, the art of maintaining clean Invisalign aligners is a balancing act: don’t clean them enough, and you end up wearing a science project on your teeth. Clean them too aggressively, and you can damage the aligners or make them more prone to attracting plaque.

Three Methods to Try

I propose you try out my three options below, and see which works best for you.

  1. Method One: The Minimalist

Toothbrush + Cold Water

In most cases, you can’t go wrong by simply brushing your aligners each time you brush your teeth. Use a small amount of toothpaste if you like (the residual amount left on the brush after brushing your teeth is plenty).

Be sure to wash and rinse your aligners under cold water, never hot. Hot water can distort the plastic of your aligner or retainer and compromise the fit.

PRO TIP: Technique matters. Brush  your Invisalign aligners with the brush oriented so the long side of the brush lines up with the crevices where there are gaps between teeth.

Brush with an up-and-down motion across all those little crevices, rather than the side-to-side and circular motions you give your teeth and gums. Actually look at each crevice and see that there is no more crud. Don’t just wave your brush over it and hope for the best… use your eyeballs!

If you find your aligners become cloudy-, dull- or scratched-looking using this method, it may be because your toothpaste is too abrasive. You may want to find a more gentle, less-abrasive toothpaste to protect your aligners and, more importantly, your tooth enamel.

If you find your aligners are getting grimy even after diligent brushing, try graduating to The Super Soaker method.

2. Method Two: The Super Soaker

Toothbrush + Cold Water

Bleach Soak for Stains

Vinegar + Baking Soda Soak for Build-up

For this method, brush your aligners as you would in The Minimalist method. Just add in one or two 30-minute soaks per week based on your needs:

If your Invisalign aligners are stained or discolored…

Once a week, soak your Invisalign aligners for 30-minutes in a diluted bleach solution (about 1 tablespoon in a cup of cold water is perfect). Brush and rinse your aligners well before putting them back in your mouth.

PRO TIP: If your Invisalign aligners leave a bleach taste in your mouth even after rinsing, try giving them an “after-soak” in pure cold water. About 15 minutes should help take away the taste.

If your Invisalign aligners have visible tartar build-up…

Once a week, soak your Invisalign aligners for at least 30-minutes in white vinegar. A few minutes before pulling your aligners out, add a dash of baking soda (not too much or you’ll create a volcano! Let the solution bubble and froth for a few minutes, then brush and rinse your aligners well before putting them back in your mouth.

3. Method Three: The Full-on OCD

Toothbrush + Dish Soap + Cold Water

Retainer Brite Tablets + Mini-Ultrasonic

I get it. You’ve tried everything, and still your aligners look….. gross. Welcome to method three: The Full-On OCD.

Have a dedicated toothbrush you use just for your aligners. Keep it with you, and brush them every time you put them back in. When you can, use dish soap (blue Dawn is amazing) and plenty of elbow grease. Just be careful not to bend or break your aligner in your quest for cleanliness.

Feel free to use the soaks described above in the Super Soaker Method. Better still, use  your own personal mini-ultrasonic cleaner and use Retainer Brite tablets as often as needed. Simply drop your aligners and one Retainer Brite tablet in the ultrasonic chamber, fill with cold water, close the lid and let ‘er rip for 15-20 minutes or more. Vinegar also makes a great ultrasonic soak, but it needs longer to work.

The Bottom Line

Having shiny and clean Invisalign aligners is more about working smart than working hard – try the methods here and see if they work for you. I tend to be in the Super Soaker camp, because I feel like brushing alone (if done properly) can pretty much do the job to keep my aligners clean. The extra vinegar soak once per week is all I need to keep them looking and feeling clean.

Good luck and happy cleaning!

IPR ; Interproximal …what?

IPR ;Interproximal -what?

 ipr

As part of your treatment to give you a great healthy smile, yourdentist may feel that Interproximal Reduction (IPR), polishing between your teeth to reduce friction, will contribute to the successful outcome of your orthodontic treatment. It may also contribute to long-term stability of your results after you finish your treatment.

What is the reason for IPR?

The intention of IPR is to acquire more space for your teeth so they align correctly and quickly. IPR can also be done to improve the shape of your teeth and make your smile more attractive. Yourdentist will recommend IPR if it is a solution to your individual need.

How does IPR work?

Once yourdentist identifies which teeth should have IPR, a very fine polishing strip is used on the sides of each tooth where the tooth comes in contact with neighbouring teeth.

Will IPR damage my teeth or gums?

The health of your teeth and gums is of utmost concern to your orthodontist. IPR is a well-trusted and safe dental procedure. In a 2007 study by Professor of Orthodontics, Dr Björn U. Zachrisson, which looked at the long term effects of IPR, it was concluded that IPR does not make the teeth more susceptible to tooth decay nor does the procedure predispose gums to gum disease. Thedentist polishes your teeth to carefully gain additional space between the teeth. Desired positioning can now be achieved now that IPR is complete. IPR is completely pain-free as there are no nerve endings in the outer layer of the tooth.

Will I notice gaps between my teeth after IPR?

Because the polishing between your teeth is so fine, IPR does not leave noticeable gaps between your teeth. The minute space created between teeth will quickly close as the teeth move into their correct alignment.

How long does it take?

IPR takes only a few minutes and is usually spread over several visits.

How will the dentist decide whether I require IPR or not?

When deciding whether IPR is necessary or not, yourdentist will consider such factors as the size and shape of your teeth, their positions as well as the spacing required to align your teeth to give you the beautiful smile you have been waiting for!

What you should know about Invisalign Braces

What you should know about Invisalign Braces

make invis more effective

Invisalign braces are great and very popular amongst celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Ricky Wilson and Justin Bieber. They have been around for quite a while and as an alternative to metal braces they are a godsend to many people in need of them.

If you are looking to invest in Invisalign braces, be aware of some of the things you should know.

Developing a lisp for a few days

When you are new to Invisalign braces you may experience a slight lisp for about a day or two after putting in your new Invisalign tray. This is nothing to worry about as you will get used to wearing the braces and the lisp will naturally lose itself.

Requiring a file down on attachment buttons

The attachment buttons have created a mix reaction on visibility by wearers, as some believe they aren’t noticeable whereas some believe that they are. Make sure you satisfied with the visibility of the buttons when you get them fitted. There have also been issues around the buttons being too sharp and resulting in cuts in the inside of the wearer’s mouth. Speaking to your orthodontist and getting them to file the button down can resolve this problem.

Tooth Filing and over crowded teeth

Before getting Invisalign, your orthodontists would have had a consultation with you and examined your teeth. Invisalign will not fix over crowded teeth that require movements more than 4 millimetres. But very crowded teeth, that don’t need more than 4 millimetres of movement, may need to be filed down. This is called IPR, enamel reduction, or shaving. Ask your orthodontist if this can be an option for you.

Keeping a clean Invisalign hygiene

If you do not look after your Invisalign trays – by which we mean cleaning them after eating and at the time of your brushing regime – then you may experience yellowing and odour problems. The trays can start to smell and go yellow from bacteria build up if you do not clean them properly.

So make sure you clean them for every chance you get. You may start getting straighter teeth but you most definitely do not want a yellowish colour appearance.

Orthodontic Big Words- what the funny terms means

Orthodontic Big Words- what the funny terms means

invisalign-ig-thumb-a

Not only is correcting any dental problems good for your confidence but it is also vital for your health. Some small problems can lead to even bigger problems if untreated.

Overbite – An overbite is one of the most common problems people have faced. Nearly 70% of dental disorders in children are overbites.

An overbite occurs when the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth. Typically caused by genetics, bad oral habits or an overdevelopment of the bone that supports the teeth.

Having an overbite can lead to gum problems or irritation. This can cause painful jaw and joint problems.

Underbite – An underbite is similar to an overbite; the difference is an underbite is when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth. This can usually be caused by undergrowth of the upper jaw, or overgrowth of the lower jaw. Occasionally both can cause it. Another cause is missing some of your upper teeth, which can prevent the normal function of front teeth or molars, leading to tooth wear. Just like an overbite, underbites can cause painful jaw and joint problems.

Gapped teeth – Abnormal continued growth of the jawbone can be how gaps between teeth can occur. Missing teeth can be a cause of the surrounding teeth to shift due to the extra space. Spacing issues and gaps between your teeth can lead to gum problems, due to the lack of protection by your teeth. Gaps can also lead to periodontal pockets and increased risk of periodontal disease.

Crossbite- A crossbite will occur when the upper and lower jaws are misaligned, and cause one or more upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth. This can happen on both the front and sides of the mouth. Crossbite can cause wear of the teeth, gum disease and even bone loss.

How to correct dental problems

There are many solutions to fixing dental problems. One of them is Invisalign treatment. This treatment is formed up of several specially made aligners that will slowly realign your teeth for that perfect smile. These aligners should be worn for at least twenty to twenty-two hours a day. Treatment can last around thirteen months or longer depending on how severe the problem is.

Invisalign Tips

Invisalign Tips

inivisiling

There are a number of top tips out there for Invisalign so we’ve whittled it down to our favourites.

  1. Clean aligners regularly

Wearing aligners constantly can stain them and start to make your break smell. Cleaning them regularly can prevent this and keep them fresh. We also suggest that when removing your aligners to place them in some water to stop any particles sticking to them. It will also make them feel fresh when putting them back in.

  1. On-the-go cleaning

With Invisalign it is important to not only keep your aligners clean but also keep your teeth clean too. Having travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste on your at all times will allow you to always clean your teeth. This is helpful for when you go out for a meal and will need to clean your teeth before putting your aligners back in.

Also have a place to store them while eating. The best item to have is a case. You can either buy an Invisalign case or a gum shield case will do the trick too!

  1. Watch what you eat

It is said that the Invisalign treatment is a great way to become healthier. This is due to not being able to eat a lot of sugar food and drinks. Sugary food and drinks will help bacteria to develop on your teeth. This will damage the enamel on your teeth and make them very weak. Items that you should steer clear of are:

  • Wine
  • Fizzy drinks
  • Coffee
  • Sugary sweets
  1. Changing your aligners

Changing aligners can be very uncomfortable for the first few hours, and for a bit after you take them out for the first time. To make them a little more bearable, rinse them in warm (NOT hot water- this will change the shape of your aligners).

You could also put your aligners in at night. You will be asleep for the first few hours of discomfort.

  1. Wear them all the time

The most important tip for having a successful Invisalign treatment is to wear your aligners continuously. The less you wear them the less affect they will have on your teeth. The more you wear your aligners the more comfortable they will become. This is because your teeth will soon start to adjust.

There are hundreds of top tips out there for you to use during your Invisalign treatment. Book a free consultation to find out more about Invisalign and how it can improve your smile
